What is AI visibility?

Jesse Scherpen

AI visibility is the chance that an AI search engine mentions your business when someone asks a question about your field.

ChatGPT, Perplexity, Copilot and Google's AI Overviews give their own answers, and choose which sources to mention.

It's also called GEO: generative engine optimization.

How it works

You give us your website and what the article should be about. One form, done in a minute.

Our system does the research and writes the article, so it matches the way you talk about your field.

You get the article in your inbox. If you like it, we'll talk further. If not, you just keep it.

How to get found in AI search engines

There's no button that puts you at the top of ChatGPT or Google. What does work: making sure you're the source that's easiest to use. That comes down to five things.

  1. 01

    Have something worth quoting

For each service or field, write at least one page that really answers a question. A page that only says “contact us” gives an AI search engine nothing to mention.

An article about your field every week
  2. 02

Put the answer at the top

Start with the core: what something is and what the reader should do with it. The nuance comes after. Your reader gets help faster, and an AI search engine finds what it can reuse faster.

  3. 03

    Pick a clearly defined topic

Better ten articles about one field than ten about ten different ones. That way you become the obvious source for that topic, instead of a site that writes a little about everything.

  4. 04

    Add something of your own

Your own numbers, a client case, a method with a name. An original source has more to offer than the fifth summary of the same story.

  5. 05

    Get mentioned in other places

Mentions in trade media, by industry associations and by partners carry a lot of weight, even without a link. This part takes the most time, and it's the hardest for a competitor to copy.

Questions about AI visibility

AI visibility is the chance that AI search engines like ChatGPT, Perplexity or Google's AI Overviews mention your business in their answer. Unlike classic search results, the searcher gets one combined answer with a handful of sources. If you're not among them, that person doesn't see you.

First make sure your site has something about your field that a model can actually quote: clear explanations, your own numbers and a clearly defined topic. Put your core answer in the first sentences of a page and work on mentions elsewhere on the web. Without content of your own there's nothing to mention, however well the rest is set up.

Partly. Google Search Console shows which impressions come from AI Overviews, and you can ask the different models a fixed list of questions yourself and keep track of who gets mentioned. There are also paid tools that do this automatically. In our article on AI search engines we list ten of those tools, from free to enterprise.

No, but it's built on top of it. AI search engines take most of their sources from the same index as the regular search results, so without SEO you won't get anywhere. The difference is the goal: SEO aims for rankings and clicks, AI visibility aims for getting mentioned. That second layer is also called GEO, Generative Engine Optimization.

Ask ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google the question a customer would ask, and see whether you're mentioned. Then ask directly about your company name and check whether what's said about you is correct. Also look at which sources appear under the answers: those are the sites AI trusts in your field.

Yes, and sometimes even better. A small business with a clearly defined field can become the obvious source for that topic faster than a big company that writes about everything. You don't need to be found everywhere, only for the questions your customers ask.

There's no set timeline. Google first has to find and index a new page, and you need to show up as a source more often before you get mentioned. Think months rather than weeks, and don't trust anyone who promises you a date.

A good agency makes sure your site has something worth quoting, that your pages are clearly structured and that you get mentioned in more places. At SharpClicks, that starts with content about your field. What an agency can't do is guarantee that an AI search engine mentions you: it picks its own sources.

Nothing. You get one article on a topic you choose, with no obligation. If you like it, we can talk about more. If you don't, you keep the article anyway and there's nothing else you need to do.
